Google Ads (previously known as Google Adwords) is a highly effective method of ‘pay-per-click’ (explained below) advertising that can promote you, your business and associated services to a geographically specific target audience.

When configured correctly your Google Ads are only shown to people who are searching using keywords and phrases related to you, your business and related products.

With mobile devices now more commonly being used for Google Searches, having Google Ad Campaigns for you and/or your business name could be beneficial for you.

Google Ads sends potential clients to your website which in addition to potentially converting into business for you, can also help improve Google Ranking (Google loves websites that receive lots of visits).

What is ‘Pay-Per-Click’ Advertising?

When someone clicks on one of your Google Ads, you pay Google a pre-determined amount. If someone only sees your advert but does not click on it, you don’t pay.

How Much Might You Pay?

The ‘cost-per-click’ (i.e. the amount you pay each time someone clicks on one of your Google Ads) will depend on the keywords you are targeting; the more competitive they are/the more people that are targeting the same keywords, the more you are likely to have to pay.

As a very (very) rough guide, expect to pay between £1 and £5 per click.

  • ‘Driving Lessons’         Approx. £1.10 per click
  • ‘Buy Mobile Phones’   Approx. £3.50 per click
  • ‘Share Dealing’            Approx. £12.50 per click

What You Will Need

You will need to have Google Ads account which you can set up for free. Even if you decide to use us or another company to help you, ensure that you have your own Google Ads account so that you are in complete control and have access to 100% of the information.

You should also install the Google Ads App on your phone so that you can regularly check your ads and stop and start your campaigns.

We recommend you steer clear of anyone stipulating that your campaigns will be set up in their Google Ads account (otherwise how can you be certain about how much you’re actually spending on advert clicks?)

If you already have a Gmail account, you should be able to go to www.google.co.uk/adwords/ and sign in/create an account using the same login details you use for Gmail.

If you do not have a Gmail/Google account, you’ll need to visit www.google.co.uk/adwords/ and click the ‘Start Now’ button.

Be Aware: Google will ask for a payment method during the account setup, however, you will only pay once you start running your ad campaigns.

What Are ‘Keywords’?

Keywords are the words related to you, your business and associated services that people use when they search on Google. For example, Mears Websites might target (among others) ‘Websites and Digital Marketing Agency Essex’ and ‘Web Designer Essex’.

Negative Keywords

There some keywords that you may prefer to not trigger your adverts to be displayed, perhaps ‘Jobs’ or ‘training’. Such keywords would be considered a ‘negative keywords’.

For example, Mears Websites may not necessarily want to pay for an advert click for someone searching for ‘Web Design Jobs’.

Within the Google Ads system, Negative Keywords Lists can be created which are designed to prevent your Ads being displayed for keywords that are irrelevant to you and/or your business.

Initially, some clicks may still occur, but over time as more negative keywords become apparent they can be added to the lists.

Your objective should be for your adverts to eventually only be triggered for the exact keywords you are targeting.

Can You Limit How Much You Spend?

Yes, you can set a maximum daily budget. You can also set up individual daily budgets for each of your campaigns.

Can You Stop and Start Your Google Ads?

Yes, you can. You can pause everything, or just specific campaigns, advert groups, individual adverts and even specific targeted keywords at any time.

How Do You Know Which Keywords to Target?

Within the Google Ads platform, there is a tool that you can use to ‘ask’ Google if people have been searching for certain keywords.

Google then provides the average monthly searches, by geographical region if specified, over the past 12 months. It also shows keywords that have been used that are similar to those you have asked about.
